The defence industry suffered a blow when governments decided to decrease their investments and prolong the use of their equipment. These cutbacks have made exportation a vital axis for the future of these companies. In Europe, the impact is bigger than in the US or Russia. Selling to many foreign countries means that one must design configurable product and respect international standards while developing new collaborative processes.
Military programmes are very specific and, in particular, a significant proportion of payments is subject to on-time delivery of documentation. In most cases, delivery is made in 2 or 3 batches involving the output of hundreds of thousands of pages per delivery.
Today, most companies (public or state owned or controlled) have invested in specific tailor-made document solutions, resulting in varied and numerous isolated software systems addressing the needs of their domestic clients. This is clearly not the way forward.
